The Turner House Gallery has reopened its doors today, showcasing the well known illustrations by Quentin Blake.

After 2 years of discussions with Amgueddfa Cymru- National Museum Wales on how to transform the gallery, it has now been decided by Penarth Town Council that the historical building will be turned into a new multi-purpose cultural venue.

The original re-opening date faced months of delays due to the ongoing pandemic restriction, with 24th January replaced by 20th May.

First opened in 1888, the gallery exhibited the collection of James Pike Thompson, a local Penarth flour merchant.

The collection included drawings, etchings and ceramic pieces by artists Rembrandt, Date Rossett and J.M.W Turner, who the building was named after.

Today, the gallery houses a collection of illustrations from the famous Roald Dahl’s children’s book, The BFG.

The Turner House will be open Thursday and Friday from 12pm-16.30pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm.

All exhibitions are free to attend.

Upcoming events include;

The Big Friendly Drawing Workshop with Penarth based illustrator Chris Glynn- Wednesday 2nd June 11am-3pm.
