Review: Dreamgirls at Wales Millennium Centre

John DaviesCulture, Reviews

Dreamgirls tells the story of The Dreams – Effie, Lorrell and Deena – three talented young singers in the turbulent 1960s, a revolutionary time in American music history. We see the three friends embark upon a musical rollercoaster ride through a world of fame, fortune and the ruthless realities of show business, testing their friendships to the very limit.

Dreamgirls stars Nicole Raquel Dennis as Effie White, Natalie Kassanga as Deena Jones, Paige Peddie as Lorrell Robinson, Dom Hartley-Harris as Curtis Taylor Jr., Brandon Lee Sears as Jimmy Early, Shem Omari James as C.C. White, Jo Servi as Marty and Brianna Ogunbawo as Michelle Morris.

The two absolute highlights for Will and I were delivered both by Nicole Raquel Dennis as Effie: And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going, which closed the first act; and I Am Changing. Both incredibly powerful songs, and delivered by Dennis with such passion and emotion. The audience was silent, to hear every single note of the performance, only to burst into rapturous applause and a standing ovation.

Another great moment was delivered by the four dreams in the song One Night Only – a great power ballad on one hand, and a fabulous disco number on the other. You just have to see it.

We follow the singers’ stories over the years, from talent show competitions to the heights of stardom. And as the singers grow in confidence and success, so too does the set. It grows from quite simple beginnings to a star-studded, glitter-bombed, crystal-decked extravaganza – the perfect backdrop for some of the up-beat disco numbers.

Direct from the West End with an extraordinary story and the unforgettable, spine-tingling vocals that sent audiences wild, this spectacular musical production features the classic songs And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going, Listen, I Am Changing and One Night Only. Don’t pass up the chance to see the multi-award winning West End production of Dreamgirls while it’s in the Welsh capital.
