New Independent Food Hall in Cardiff Central

Kommune, a huge food hall, will be opening their second location in Cardiff Central. With a wide variety of independent food and drink retailers, all bringing their own unique cuisines and products. It’s an “all-day dining and retail experience” for everyone.

Plan for a Park Warden’s Hut Makeover

Plans to transform a 110-year-old park warden’s hut in Waterloo Gardens into a cafe has been approved. This little hut will be turned into a takeaway cafe, offering food and beverages to it’s customers. We’re excited to see how it will turn out!

Women-only Gym Opens in Cardiff

Tucked away in Earl Lane, this free female-only gym was founded by personal trainer Shaun Driscoll in August last year, to help women feel safer when going to the gym. With 40 members so far who have found comfort in this place. Some attend due to religious or cultural reasons, others enjoy feeling safe and relaxed.

One-Woman Charity Shop

Cardiff resident and mum-of-four has set up her own “charity shop” from her home in Fairwater and everything is free. Kayla Ellis is accepting donations of items children’s and giving them away for free to children under 16. Kayla set this up because she understands the struggle and the expense of having kids and it doing what she can to help those who need it.

Culture Club by Age Cymru

The wonderful group, Age Cymru, is piloting a Culture Club scheme in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, which aims to support isolated older people and get them out doing things they enjoy. Visiting cultural sites, community creative work and getting them out in nature. This scheme will hopefully help those who are isolated, giving them the opportunities to makes new friends and to get out and safely enjoy cultural sites.

Ukraine Tribute Appears in Cardiff

Street artist, My Dog Sighs, appeared in Cardiff as a tribute and to show support for the Ukrainian people in this difficult time. This emotional piece, that conveys the tragedy of the assault on Ukraine, has had an impact of Cardiff residents. More and more of these kinds of street art are appearing all over the UK.

Wet Weather Wear For Cardiff Primary Schools

The Outdoor Guide Foundation is raising money to provide state primary schools in Cardiff with outdoor clothing, such as wellies and waterproof coats to encourage and enable schools to learn (and enjoy) the outdoors, even when the weather is less agreeable.

New Bilingual Education Recourses for Welsh Schools

World Book Day saw an interesting announcement from the Welsh Government and the Minister for Education and Welsh Language. They are introducing a bilingual educational resources company, aimed in creating and providing useful resources for schools and learners. A new curriculum with be introduced in schools, along with new materials and better access to relevant resources for teachers.

More Funding for Mental Health

The Welsh Government has announced they’ll be putting more money into supporting the free online tool, SilverCloud Wales, which helps people manage their mental health, particularly people with anxiety, depression and stress. Launch during the pandemic, the pilot scheme has proven very effective in supporting peoples wellbeing and will now be supported for three more years.

Cardiff Council Awarded for LBGTQ+ Inclusive Work

Cardiff Council have been awarded a Stonewall Gold Statue for their great work to imbed equality, value diversity and demonstrate inclusivity, from day-to-day life, to the work place. The Cardiff Council have taken steps to ensure it’s residents are equal and valued.
