Penarth Library reopened after refurbishment

Penarth Library officially reopened earlier this month, 8 months after closing its doors. In an initial bid to tackle the Coronavirus, all library services were suspended before a click-and-collect service was implemented in late June.

The new refurbishment, which has been funded jointly by the Vale Of Glamorgan Council and Welsh Government, features a redecorated ground floor with new furniture, an enquiry desk, carpet and shelving. As well as many of the library’s main features being revived, the new entrance foyer reflects the traditional architecture of the original building. Repairs to the roof around the clock tower have also been undertaken.

Covid-related safety features have also been put into place, with 20-minute book browsing sessions and 50-minute computer slots available to book in advance. These fixed time slots also ensure that staff can thoroughly sanitise machines between uses. There are also temporary plans to move some of the children’s stock and services to Penarth Pier Pavilion, to ensure that the regular programme of children’s activities can take place in a larger space ahead of Summer.

Seating areas have also been removed to discourage sitting and toilets are to be closed for public use. Hand gel is to be offered on entry as well as a mandatory track and trace system. All books are to be quarantined for 72 hours upon return to the library, before being thoroughly cleaned and put back into circulation.

The current weekday opening times are from 10am-1pm and 2pm to 5pm, with Saturday’s opening times being 10am-1pm and 2pm to 4pm.
