Memories of Tiger Bay Captured In New Exhibition

John DaviesCreative

Spanning a period from the 1970s to the 1990s, Inside Out, by local brothers Anthony and Simon Campbell, documents the people at the heart of the Tiger Bay community.

The exhibition showcases a range of of black and white photography of the area formerly known as Tiger Bay. Motivated by the predominance of outsiders’ images and narratives of the area, the brothers sought to redress the balance.

Inside Out documents a period of great physical change in the area and celebrates the continuity of spirit from the communities that lived through it. The people depicted are friends, family and local characters that are named in the captions.

Rather than a chronological approach, the exhibition juxtaposes Images from different years; for example a photo of the first Bute Carnival in the mid-1970s next to one from the 1990s, creating a timeless and authentic portrait of a community.

Anthony Campbell (born 1956) played bass guitar in local soul band Messiah during the 1970s. He always had a camera handy to photograph people during breaks in the music. He now works as a freelance designer in London. Simon Campbell (born 1957) has a long history of working within the local community; he helped to establish the Butetown Photography Group and the Black Film And Video Workshop.

This exhibition has been curated by Cardiff Umbrella in partnership with Penarth Town Council. Cardiff Umbrella is an artist-run collective based in Cardiff’s Capitol Shopping Centre.
