Loving Living Here For 51 Years

Katherine PeachBusiness, Business Articles

In the past year, we’ve all developed a new appreciation for our homes and how important finding the right one can be. David Baker and his team know this better than anyone. David Baker set up his business with Frank Powell 51 years ago, seeing the industry in ways others didn’t, leading to his success. This family-run business has an unrivalled knowledge of our lovely seaside town.

What has David Baker done to adjust to this past year?

For the safety of the staff and the customers, all my colleagues are now working from home. I, myself having no laptop or emails access, have been working from the office on my own, throughout this past year. All the correct social distancing measures have been put in place and we’re strictly doing viewings with firm buyers only.

This past year people have spent more of their inside, any advice for finding that perfect home?

To find that “perfect” home is an impossible task. My advice for people looking for a new house, is aim for a 6/10 and do it up in your own style and taste. Only you can turn that space into your perfect home, which in turn will increase it’s value.

What is it about Penarth that makes it so special?

Penarth is a very special place to live. The beautiful walks, the coastal views and with only a quick train journey to Cardiff. But what really makes Penarth special is its high-street, with that strong sense of community. Always aiming to help and support each other.

Why do your customers come to you?

We are well known in this community for our decades of invaluable local knowledge. With our straight and honest approach, we will always try to help both the vendor and the buyer. Our customers can always rely on me being in the office, pandemic or not. Then with Richard and Craig in the office with their new ideas, it’s a perfect mix.

What has been one positive to come out of this year?

Although for a time, we may have lost the camaraderie of the office, it has meant that people do care more now. Two years ago, people could be quite abrupt, wrapped up in their own busy lives. But now, people are more patient and understanding. There’s a softening in people’s attitudes. We’re seeing more stories of compassion, like the Tim Musson and his daughter Anna Musson, who walked two miles every day for a month to raise money for Vale Plus, a Barry-based day centre for disabled people.

What’s your favourite thing about Penarth?

Location location location! Aside from its great access to Cardiff. Penarth has the city, the coast and the country at your fingertips. With a brilliant choice of restaurants, the vibrant high-street and that strong sense of community amongst residents and businesses. There really is nowhere better in the world.
