Local women walk 5k for RNLI Penarth and National Coastwatch Institution

A group of four women who made it their mission to fundraise money for National Coastwatch Institution (Nell’s Point) and RNLI Penarth, have raised more than their initial targets with the Just Giving page still open for donations.

Linda Foye, Heather Stevenson, Ann Gripton and Rosie Collard braved the cold weather and walked the Prosecco 5k around Barry Island on Sunday 23rd January, dressed in fun costumes. Linda said: ‘Apart from possible frightening small children with out outfits we spoke to a fair few people on our pleasant, leisurely amble about the work of our charities.  All four of us are watchkeepers at NCI Nell’s Point and Heather and I both volunteer at the RNLI shop in Penarth.’

‘Between us we’ve clocked up 267 years with around 60 years of volunteering for a variety of charities.  Ann (the penguin) has worked with the National Trust at Duffryn House for many years and was invited to the Queen’s garden party a few years ago in recognition of her work.’

‘This little stroll has amazingly raised almost £800 so far with donations still coming in.’

‘We were very grateful to be sponsored by Barry businesses Boofy’s, Finnegan’s and the Ship, all of which kindly donated Prosecco.  Boofy’s also fuelled us with their excellent chips on the day. The final amount raised will be split equally between NP and Penarth RNLI.’

The Just Giving Page has reached a total of 576, by 38 supporters, with supporters flocking to the comment section to send their best wishes. One comment, from Jules Friend, reads: ‘Well done all, keep up the fund raising for such a worthwhile cause.’

Another, from Jess Baker, reads, ‘Great work everyone- you are all heroes! Special shout out to Ann – my inspiration!’

Taking to the page having completed the walk, Linda wrote, ‘ We did it! Thank you all so much for the support. There are still some pledges to come in so I’ll post the final tally in due course. Thank you!’
