Rossini’s graphic Overture conjures a violent storm, an idyllic pastoral scene and, famously, the arrival of the cavalry. William Tell signalled the composer’s farewell to the operatic genre, while Elgar’s richly expressive Cello Concerto, with its hints of autumn bonfires, marked this composer’s last completed major work in 1919. A few years on and Janácek’s late creative flowering is beautifully captured in one
of his most lyrical operas and his vividly scored Sinfonietta enclosed by arresting fanfares from a vast brass section.
