Carducci Quartet with Huw Watkins
Huw Watkins’ involvement in this year’s Festival as a featured composer reaches its zenith in this concert, when you can hear him play his own music for piano.
He is joined by contemporary music specialists Carducci Quartet for a performance of his Piano Quintet (2018).
This lively piece couldn’t contrast more sharply with The Wind in High Places, from this year’s other featured composer, John Luther Adams. Inspired by the Alaskan mountains, it’s a sparse, hypnotic string quartet, which regular Festival collaborator, composer Pwyll ap Siôn, has described as “breathtakingâ€.
And if you saw our outdoor performances in 2019 with Astrid the Street Organ, you’ll have come across David Roche, who coordinated the project and introduced the compositions. This time we’ve commissioned David to write a new piece for solo piano, which Huw Watkins will perform in its world premiere in this concert.
