A 63-year-old man is set to cycle 200-miles in a bid to raise money for Cowbridge Tennis Club and Prostate Cymru.

Nigel Osborne, a Cowbridge Tennis Member, has planned to cycle from Caernarfon to Cowbridge with the hopes of raising £15,000 for Cowbridge Tennis Club and a contribution to Prostate Cymru. The cycle will start on the 17th September and will arrive at the tennis club the following day, meaning that Nigel will have to cover 15 miles every hour to reach his goal.

Money already secured from the Vale of Glamorgan County Council and Sport Wales will also contribute towards the instalment of a fifth tennis court at the club. The new addition will allow Cowbridge Tennis to fulfil their commitment of providing more capacity for both members and non-members to be able to play, improve and enjoy the sport.

20% of the money raised from the challenge will be donated to Prostate Cymru.

Talking about the cycle, Nigel said: “It is an exciting prospect being able to combine my passion for tennis and cycling to raise funds towards a new court and contribute to the fight against prostate cancer and make a difference to so many people.”

“I have never done this challenge before and at my age I cannot underestimate the physical and mental challenge involved, particularly if the usual south westerly wind blows throughout day one!”

The Chair of Cowbridge Tennis Club, Richard Owen, commented: “Tennis is a sport that is open to everyone. The club’s popularity is booming beyond expectations. An additional court is essential so that we can continue to meet the demand for our facilities.”

“Nigel’s solo cycle challenge is an amazing feat of fitness and perseverance, so we hope that everyone gets behind it and we are able to raise the funds we need, as well as donating to the fight against cancer.”

A small support team from the tennis club has been set up to accompany Nigel on his journey, with members of the community encourages to join him for the final part of his journay from Port Talbot.

Other challenges are expected to be hosted by Cowbridge Tennis within the coming months to continue the fundraising.
