Graham Fitkin: The Composer Plays
There will be a pre-concert talk by journalist Steph Power (Wales Arts Review, The Stage, The Independent / i) at 7:15pm
Graham Fitkin | A programme of music by Graham Fitkin, played by the composer, including Resistances, Running and Breathing, and two world premieres for prepared piano. |
The initial presentation of Graham Fitkin’s music at the Festival in the early 1990’s was often characterized by pieces for the uniform sonorities of the piano, solo pieces and multi-piano – especially six piano – pieces. This conscious artistic choice strongly influenced his early ouput. Over time, his work was increasingly sought after and this in turn fuelled a move to an increasingly broad range of instrumental combinations.
Throughout his artistic career to date, however, the piano has remained an important source of inspiration, sometimes eliciting a range of more thoughtful, darker-hued works than the bright lively pieces he is traditionally associated with. Having the composer perform them gives us a special insight into them and there is also no more fitting way to celebrate the finale of the 50th anniversary Festival than with the fascinating range of work on offer tonight from a composer whose long connection with the Festival we value so highly.
